Day 3 Paihia – Cape Reinga – Paihia
After Early Breakfast Proceed for Full Day CAPE REINGA TOUR AT 7.10 AM, Drive along the shores of Ninety Mile Beach as the waves crash beside the custom-built coach. Feel the sand between your toes as you help your driver guide dig for shellfish (conditions permitting). Your off-road journey continues up Te Paki Stream, stopping at the massive sand dunes where you can experience the thrills and spills of sand surfing. Clambering up and surfing down the dunes (if you dare!) is sure to get your heart pumping. Visit the Puketi Kauri Forest and get up close to ancient and majestic giant kauri trees and native bush. Visit Cape Reinga and hear the stories of this significant site where, according to Maori legend, spirits depart on their journey home to Hawaiki. Reach Hotel by 5 – 6 Pm. Day 6 Waitomo – Matamata
After Breakfast Proceed to Waitomo Glowworm Caves, the name “Waitomo” comes from the Maori words wai, water and tomo, hole or shaft. The local Maori people had known about the caves for about a century before a local Maori, originally from Kawhia, Tane Tinorau, and English surveyors, Laurence Cussen and Fred Mace, were shown the entrance in 1884 and Tane and Fred did extensive explorations in 1887 and 1888. Their exploration was conducted with candlelight on a raft going into the cave where the stream goes underground (now the cave’s tourist exit.) As they began their journey, they came across the Glowworm Grotto and were amazed by the twinkling glow coming from the ceiling. As they travelled further into the cave by poling themselves towards an embankment, they were also astounded by the limestone formations. These formations surrounded them in all shapes and sizes. Day 13 Christchurch (1 Night)
After Breakfast Proceed to Christchurch Beautiful Garden City of South Island, Also Known the Most Populated and Biggest City of South Island of New Zealand. After Lunch Visit “INTERNATIONAL ANTARCTIC CENTER”. The Centre is home to the New Zealand, United States and Italian Antarctic Programmes and comprises administration offices, warehousing, an American/New Zealand clothing store, a post office and travel agency, the Antarctic Passenger Terminal and the Visitor Centre, now called ‘The Antarctic Attraction’. It is for this last item that the center is best known, as it forms a significant tourist attraction. ‘The Antarctic Attraction’ consists of Antarctic exhibits, a café, and bar. The center operates a Hagglund Ride around the centre’s land. This is aimed mainly at children, however is an educational tool for all ages, to display the mobility of the Hagglund. The Hagglund is an Antarctic Vehicle that is still in operation. Among other attractions, there is an Antarctic snow storm room, an audiovisual display, and little blue penguins at the NZ Penguin Encounter. The center is set up for taking in penguins from the wild that are in need of help, with one of those penguins nicknamed ‘Morgan’ getting media attention for refusing to swim.
